Greetings,

As part of the of the Payments Council's National Payments Plan Progress Report, we would like to share with you our research on cheque usage that was highlighted in this report.

The research sought to clarify several key points amongst consumers and SMEs :
  • Understand the barriers to cheque substitution
  • Identify the areas where work is needed on acceptable alternatives to cheques
  • Highlight where more education is needed on existing alternatives

The overall objective of AIA's research was to understand why consumers and SMEs continue to use cheques. In particular we sought to uncover the features of cheque payments that make committed cheque users reluctant to relinquish them, whilst also asking if there are still particular uses of cheques for which there are not yet any adequate alternatives.
